Health and Nutrition

In today’s society, healthy eating and nutrition isn't common sense. It’s something you have to educate yourself about and make an effort to make sure you are feeding your body everything it needs. When it comes to healthy eating, the goal is not to go on a strict diet, be unrealistically thin, or eat tasteless foods. Eating healthy can become a great lifestyle and along with moderate exercise, helps you to feel as good as possible both physically and mentally.

What is healthy eating and nutrition?

Nutrition is “the process of eating the right kind of food so you can grow properly and be healthy (Merriam Webster Dictionary).” Eating healthy is having a nutritional lifestyle that promotes growth and health. This includes eating food from several of the food groups daily because no single food group can provide your body with the nutrients that it craves. It's also important to limit your daily calorie intake to what your body needs. It’s a good idea to try and eat organic instead of conventional because of all of the benefits that it provides. Eating organic means less pesticides and more of the nutrients that our bodies need. “...in 2007 a study out of Newcastle University in the United Kingdom reported that organic produce boasted up to 40 percent higher levels of some nutrients (including vitamin C, zinc and iron) than its conventional counterparts Eating Well.”

Why do you want to eat healthy?

Feeding your body the nutrients that it needs and exercising leads to feeling good, increased mobility and having more energy, stabilizing and improving your mood, reduced risk for chronic disease, and keeping yourself as healthy as possible, all of which leads to a longer life.

Where can I get healthy and nutritious food?

You can get healthy and nutritious food at your local grocery store, farmers market, or organic food store, you just have to look for it. You don’t have to eat all organic in order to have a healthy diet. Fill your cart with colorful fruits and vegetables, lean meats, eggs, good fats and oils, whole wheat bread and keep it as raw as you can for the healthiest option. Avoid processed foods as much as possible. You don’t have to spend an excessive amount of money at a City Market, Healthy Living or a farmer’s market to eat healthy, but if you can, it’s not a bad option. When should I eat healthy and nutritious food?

If you’re thinking about eating healthy, it’s recommended that you fill your diet with healthy foods on a daily basis. If you want lasting benefits, you can’t just go on “a diet” for a few weeks. It really is much better to eat well everyday and feed your body what it needs. In the documentary King Corn, it said that our generation has a shorter lifespan than our parents. That is because the food that is very easy to access is cheaper and really not good for us. We need to all look at what we are putting in our bodies. Eating healthy promotes a happier life.
